When kids train to put on a show they are learning life skills:
Empathy, Team work, Patience, Listening, Focus, Hard Work, Awareness, Confidence, Discipline, Personal Responsibility, Body Control, Problem Solving…the list goes on!

Who: Our community program is open to ALL 2nd to 6th graders in the Portland area.

What: A 60 minute production explored, rehearsed and then performed. Kids will learn what it takes to put on a professional show through fun theater and vocal games as well as by being cast in the show. No formal auditions are held ahead of the start date. Any kid who joins the club joins the cast! (please see additional info on casting and production below OR read our FAQs page)

When: Tuesdays 3:30 – 5:30pm; September 5 – April 17 (with possible extended or added rehearsals later)
NO class on Tuesday March 27th.

Where: Rehearsals held at 2800 SE Harrison St: St. David of Wales Parish Hall with tentative performances on April 20 and 21. Your child must be available for the performance weekend.

We can accept students up to October 10 at a pro-rated rate (-$16 per missed class). Any kids entering class after our Tuesday October 3rd class will only be considered for chorus roles.

There are no refunds after October 10th

Refunds before October 10th will be prorated at $16 per class and minus a $50 admin fee

Additional Info:

Walking Group: If you would like your child on the Abernethy walking group it will cost $35 for the 2017/18 school year. For safety reasons, we have limited our Abernethy student walking group to 20 students. Please add ‘Abernethy Walking Group’ to your cart at check out to reserve your child’s spot. This is found under Register at the top. Two Portland Drama Club staffers will pick the kids up at a designated place right after school and walk them to St. David of Wales each Tuesday. Please pack an extra snack for your Abernethy child so they can have a little something to eat along the way. It’s a long way ’til 5:30pm! (in the rainy months please try to remember boots and rain jackets- the kids sometimes arrive drenched).

Absences: Since the after school program only meets once a week (and sometimes longer stretches than that) attendance is very important. Putting on a show is a lot of work for kids and staff and absences create problems when planning what scenes and musical numbers to rehearse. Please remember the end result is a show your kids can be proud of and confident with on stage. If your child misses a great number of rehearsals we reserve the right to recast their role. If you know your child will miss a certain class because of an out of town absence in advance please let us know as it will help us plan. Obviously kids get sick and no one can plan for that, but please do try to plan appointments and play dates for other days of the week.

Casting: Typically the larger roles will go to the older kids and the ensemble/chorus roles will go to the younger kids. Younger kids will learn by the older kids’ examples and they tend to accept and like this arrangement.  Of course, there are sometimes exceptions. Sometimes it depends on the show we do or the individual kids we have attending class. Some kids are eager for a large role and some kids would like to be a supporting member no matter their age. I prefer to cast a child who is responsible, considerate and mature (for their age) in a demanding role as opposed to the kid with the best jazz hands. While we will encourage each child to step out of his comfort zone, we want all kids set up for success. We want them to feel comfortable and finish the show feeling proud and having had a fun time. Since we have been at this for quite some time both as teachers and directors but also as actors ourselves, we ask that you respect our final decision. Your child will have a better time with your full support.

Costumes: Costumes are covered in the cost of tuition. There may be a small item or type of shoe requested, however. If it is a financial burden for you please let us know. You will be notified if there is anything you need to provide for your child so there is time to get it before show time. We know you are busy parents and will keep this as easy of a process as possible.

Tickets: Our production is a registered show we’ve rented from Music Theatre International. As such they charge us for the use of their property as well as for each show performed. We will charge for tickets to our show to help offset the costs of putting on a professional show AND to help raise money for the scholarship program for the future. Tickets will be $7.
